Seventeen and Awkward

I have wanted to own a canoe for years. And recently I purchased the perfect one.

As Laura and I were hauling my new, green, 17-foot Royalex beauty home atop the roof of my Ford Escape, Laura asked me how I was planning to load and unload the canoe from the top of my car alone.

Me: It’s only 67 pounds. It’s not that heavy.

Laura: Not that heavy? That sounds like a lot to me. And it’s long and awkward.

Me: Well, if it turns out I can’t do it, I’ll have to think of some way to make it easier.

Laura: Like what? This doesn’t mean you have to spend $20,000 to buy a new truck to haul your $800 canoe, right?

Me: Of course it doesn’t. I mean more along the lines of a roof rack or something.

Laura: A roof rack? Why don’t you just get stronger.

I glance away from the road and wryly over to Laura.

She avoids eye contact as she smirks.
