Pretty Pearls

In the grey light of evening we back into my buddy’s driveway to deliver a box-full of Missouri fireworks. While we talk, Laura sits in the car with Indie. My friend’s young daughter, Elizabeth, approaches the passenger’s side window and reaches up to gently rap the glass with the nail of her index finger. Laura opens the door. Not knowing a stranger, seven year old Elizabeth, bright eyes twinkling, introduces herself to Laura. As Laura responds, Elizabeth waits patiently for Laura to finish, before exclaiming what I have long believed.

Elizabeth: (to Laura) You’re pretty!

Laura: Well thank you.

At this point, Laura identifies the tot as a fast-friend and she steps from the car and kneels down to eye-level. As she does, Elisabeth’s face beams as she exclaims:

Elizabeth: Wow! You’re really pretty!

Laura chuckles and again thanks her for the compliment.

Elizabeth gently extends her window-tapping finger and points at Laura’s pearl necklace.

She lowers her tone and squints her eyes as if she’s about to reveal a secret.

Elizabeth: Do you know what kind of diamonds those are?

Laura: What kind are they?

Elizabeth: They’re PEARLS! And they’re really pretty. I like pearls.

Laura: (grinning) I like pearls too.

After a few more minutes of conversation, we load back into the car and pull out of the driveway, waving as we drive away.

Laura: I like her. I wish she were around more often.

Aaron: Oh yeah, why’s that?

Laura: For the ego boost.
