Honeymoon’s Over

We’re at the airport in Phoenix. Headed back to Kansas City after our honeymoon in Mexico. We have to go through Customs. Passports in hand, the Americans in line infront of me breeze through their interviews.

It’s our turn. Laura and I approach the counter. The officer glances at Laura then confirms her identity on her passport. I hand officer Rodriquez my Canadian passport. She looks at the passport and then up at me. Her brow furrows.

Rodriquez: Where are you coming from?

Me: Mexico.

Rodriquez: How long were you there?

Me: Six days.

Rodriquez: Why were you there?

Me: We were on our honeymoon

Rodriquez: And where are you going?

Me: Home to Kansas City.

Rodriquez: Not with this Canadian passport you’re not. This won’t get you into the United States of America. I need your card.

I’m ready for this moment. I’m traveling with my birth certificate, driver’s license, social security card and green card.

Me: Which card do you need?

Rodriquez: Sir, I need your green card.

I’m holding all four cards in my sweaty, nervous hand. I place the whole stack on the counter.

She takes the green card, stamps my passport, and gives me the slightest grin as she welcomes me home.
