Veto Power

In Cabo it gets intensely hot in the afternoon. As a result, Laura and I often retreated to the conditioned air of our hotel suite. It’s four fifteen p.m. I’m laying in bed. Laura is reading a fashion magazine. I’m watching ESPN.

Laura: I’m hungry. Let’s go down to dinner.

Me: It’s four p.m. local time, three p.m. body time. I’m not hungry yet. Can we go in an hour?

Laura: C’mon, let’s go now.

For the first time I break my gaze from the TV and look at Laura. I smile and hold up my left hand, showing her my ring. In jest, I say…

Me: As your new husband, this piece of metal is no longer a ring, it’s now a symbol of veto power.

Laura raises her eyebrows, then squints and curls her upper lip. She holds out her hand…

Laura: But this, my dear, gives me veto veto power. Let’s go eat.

The nachos were delicious.
