Lola’s Tale

Indie and I are pals. I got her when I lived alone. I trained her myself. And now we hunt birds together. We have a special bond.

For as long as I’ve known her, Laura has wanted “her own dog.” I think it’s partly to keep her company while I’m away on business or while Indie and I are hunting, but I’m sure that it’s also a bit of Laura wanting to share a similar bond with her own pup.

But dogs are a lot of work. And we already have one. So, until now, while we have talked about it, I’ve taken a stand against actually getting a new puppy.

I changed my tune on Christmas Day. When Laura asked me if she’d be able to finally get her puppy in 2012, I said sure.

She said she was going to start looking. We’d talked about getting a cocker spaniel. And a blonde female at that. We also wanted a puppy that we could raise, train and bond with from the beginning of it’s like. We didn’t want it from a breeder or a pet store puppy mill. We wanted our pup from a family whose cocker spaniels were having a litter.

With a fair number of criteria established, I figure it would take Laura some time to find a suitable litter. And while it did take her some time, one day was a little faster than I suspected.

The litter of seven had only a single blonde female. Laura called, and she was still available. Before putting a deposit down on the pup, we wanted to go and visit, and I had some ‘puppy tests’ to put our perspective puppy through.

She passed them all. She was bold, but not aggressive. She wasn’t timid or nervous. She bounded over when called. She wagged her tail and licked our faces. When flipped on her back she fought it for a moment before yielding to being belly up. She wasn’t the litter’s smallest or largest pup. In all, she was perfect.

So last Friday, 59 days after her November 30th birthday, we welcomed a three pound bundle of fur into our home.

Thanks Paula. We’re enjoying her company. And I’m loving the fact that I’ll have a lot more new blog fodder.
