Hosed

Last week I went to wind the hose that I’d been using for the prior week to water my prematurely browning lawn. When I approached the hose cradle on the side of my house I noticed the bird nest that had been built atop the cradle where the hose would otherwise rest. Laura implored me not to disrupt it. I obliged.

The other night I was mowing the lawn and I happened to glance at the previously empty nest. I say previously, because the momma robin that built the nest had since laid four blue eggs in it.

Laura’s excited for them to hatch.

Call me a pessimist, but I’m nervous for those little robin chicks. That nest is only four feet off the ground. If one of the feral cats that roams our neighborhood hears their hungry squawking, I’m afraid those little chicks are going to be… hosed.
