Zoned Out

Three days ago we stood at 14,240 feet at the summit of Mount Evans. With gusty winds dropping the wind chill below freezing Laura told us that she’d read that we’d passed through three lifezones as we drove up North America’s highest paved road.

Laura: Right now we’re in the Alpine Zone.

She said over another gust.

Laura: Earlier we drove through the Subalpine and the Montane Zones.

Me: I’m impressed. Say, do you see that line where the timber stops over there. Do you know what that’s called?

Laura: No.

Me: You didn’t read what that line in the timber is called?

Laura: Nope. I have no idea.

Me: Laura, that’s the timberline.

Laura: Ohhhh. That makes sense.
