Life Lived and Living Life

I’m 31 years old.

I did some math the other day and learned that the collegiate graduating class of 2012 was born in 1990. Next year I’ll celebrate my ten year university reunion. It hardly seems possible.

And it seems to be going around. My friend Terry from church will celebrate, and I use that term loosely on his behalf, his 35 year college reunion next year.

It goes by fast. Too fast. And Terry has an interesting theory as to how it feels like it goes so fast.

He said that when we’re 3 years old a year feels like a really long time to us. And it should. It’s 33% of our life. When we’re 10 years old, a year still feels like a long time, after all it is 10% of our time. But by the time we’re 31, a year is more like 3%, at 50 it’s 2%. And as the percentages get smaller, the faster the years seem to tick away in the context of all the rest of our years.

But this story isn’t about life lived, it’s a story about living life.

Yesterday, Laura and I celebrated the one year anniversary of our wedding. That means that I’ve been married to my best friend for 3% of my life.

And in the context of all the rest of my years, she’s made this one the best yet.

I don’t know if Laura will concur. But I know that we can all agree that life with Ed + Laura > life without Ed + Laura.
