Bait Bucket

While we’ve never fished with them, apparently leeches make excellent walleye bait. We do the majority of our fishing in the Boundary Waters with artificial lures that require no effort to keep fresh, cool or alive. With a few long portages separating the car from the campsite, the challenge of keeping live bait alive might be too much for us to overcome.

Ed: How will we keep the leeches alive for 45 minutes of hiking over the hills?

Tim: There’s water in their container. They should be alright.

Ed: What if the water splashes out or gets too hot?

Tim: Good point. Maybe a better option would be to take them out of the water and to let them latch onto our bodies. That way we can portage with them stuck to our chests and backs.

That comment alone kept us from bringing in leeches.

It sounds like it could be worth a try.

You’re welcome to come along and give it a whirl anytime you’d like, Brad.
