Sixty One-Derful Days of Autumn

I love fall. It is, without a doubt, my favorite time of the year. The sweet-spot between the heat of summer and chill of winter, this sixty one day period from September 1 through October 31 is just the best. Here’s why…

Labor day. Halloween. Canadian Thanksgiving. Wedding anniversary.

Pumpkin patches. Apple orchards. Mums. Cornstalks. Changing colors. Falling leaves.

Baseball playoffs. Royals!?!

College football. Iowa Hawkeyes!

Professional football. Green Bay Packers!

Pre-season hockey. Go Leafs Go!

No NBA.

Baking. Chili. Stew. Roasts. Apple pie. Pumpkin pie. Cider. Hot chocolate.

Open windows. No air conditioning. No furnace. Candles burning.

New television show season. Blankets on the couch.

Cool north breezes. Starlings huddled on high wires. Migrating flocks of Canada geese. And monarch butterflies.

Blue jeans. Flannel shirts. Warm sweaters. Down comforters. Cowboy boots.

Fertilizer. Grass seed. Bonfires. Wood smoke.

Jack-o-lanterns. Trick or treating. Scary movies.

Bluebird days. Starry skies. Chilly nights. Frosty mornings.

No more mosquitoes. Or Ticks. Or Chiggars.

One last fishing trip. The first hunting trips for doves, teal, quail and pheasants.
