It’s hard to believe that Christmas is less than a week away. Everything is order – work is winding down, the tree and lights are up, presents are boxed, wrapped and ready, egg nog has been sipped, potpourri is simmered, our first blanket of snow fell this week, carols have been sung, music plays on the radio, seasonal favorites are on the television and we attended the annual church Christmas pageant.
All my life I’ve heard and read the story of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men and angels. All my life I’ve tried imagine what it must have felt like – the anxiousness, the wonder, the reverence. The awe, joy and love. The trepidation, the anticipation, the unknown. And the hope, fullness and delight of that new and very special baby. And all my life the closest I came to experiencing those feelings was my imagination.
Until this year, when all of that changed.
Only days away from being parents for the first time, we now know a portion of the hope and fear that Mary and Joseph must have felt. As our families and friends bustle with anticipation, I see in them shepherds and wise men, preparing to come, meet and care for this new baby. And in the lives of loved ones lost, it’s easier than ever to open our hearts and to feel them near.
Christmas this year will indeed be extra special.
