If You Say So

As young men, my Grandpa and his brothers were in the back forty for a rabbit hunt. They came to the fence at the edge of their property and happened upon their neighbor. As they were chatting about barbed wire fences, local cottontail populations and one can only assume the weather, the neighbor’s farm dog got to barking and yapping and crying and jumping like a dog can sometimes do.

Somewhat annoyed by Rover’s antics the farmer exclaimed, “Sometimes I wish someone would shoot that fool mutt!”

Without a moment’s hesitation one brash member of the Atkinson clan loosed a fatal volley of rabbit shot into Rover, granting the farmer’s wish straightaway.

Or, at least, so the story goes.

The punchline I always heard to this story stated that the farmer was joking, and it was the best damn hunting dog he’d ever had.

Dave, I figured the story itself was traumatic enough for my mostly female readership. The fact that the farmer was joking and that the dog was a doozie are details best left tucked away in the comments section. 😉
