Trick or Trick

Me: Laura, I’m going to have to let you go. I’m home alone and the garage door just opened.

I hang up the phone. The hairs on my neck perk up. I’m a little freaked out.

I’m at Laura’s parents house, dog sitting for the evening. They live in the country. It’s dark outside. I am not expecting company.

I open the door leading to the garage and flick on the light. I don’t see anyone or anything.

Me: Hello? Anybody there?

No answer.

I reach up and press the button to close the large garage door. The chain engages and the door begins to slowly close. When it’s four feet from closing it stops and begins to ascend again. My eyes go wide.

I step back into the house and lock the door behind me. I then rush to the front door and peer into the darkness. Their golden retriever, Henry, is out in the front yard somewhere. I can’t see him. I lock the deadbolt and head back to the door leading to the garage.

Adrenaline pumping, I open the door and step through the threshold. I look around the garage. Nothing. Under the cars. Nothing. In the dark corner, behind the shelf, in the driveway. Nothing.

I press the button to close the garage door again. I begins it’s descent, but just like before it stops and begins to open again. The third car garage door opens as well.

What the heck!

I press the buttons again and am finally able to get both doors closed and locked.

With a sigh of relief I step back into the house and lock the door behind me. I go back to the front door to let Henry in. He’s waiting for me.

He comes inside and slinks up the stairs. I follow him and he turns to face me.

Me: What was going on out there, Henry?

Submissively, he opens his mouth and the spare garage door opener bounces onto the hardwood floor. His tail wags. He knows he had me going.
