Baptismal Blues

In the Community of Christ faith tradition, baptismal candidates are fully immersed in water signifying the washing away of sin. White clothes are also traditionally worn as further symbolism of purity and renewal.

One grey summer morning in 1990 when I was nine years old, my Dad baptized me in the steely blue waters of Lake Erie.

I’ll never forget the sage pre-baptismal advice that my mom bestowed upon me at breakfast that special morning.

“Aaron,” she said with a loving, maternal look, “today is not a day to wear your blue underwear.”

Just wait till Mum bestows her Honeymoon advice upon you two love birds. It’s ironic, isn’t it, that the Honeymoon entry and the Baptismal entry are right next to each other. Humm….

You know what’s ironic, on my baptismal day Mom warned against the blue underwear, but for our little Mexican siesta, she’s the one who bought me the blue and white Maple Leafs Speedo.

Please don’t bring the speedo on our honeymoon. I will pretend like I don’t know you.

    Just kidding….sort of.
