The panfish featured in the photo above are called crappies. I caught my first crappie when I was about 10 years old, but that’s a story for another day. What I remember about that first crappie is what a funny name crappie was for a fish. That name seemed more suited to a bad day, unfavorable weather or an unfortunate haircut.
Anyway, last weekend, Dad, Tim and I spent a wonderful couple of hours catching crappies. Cast after cast we reeled in fat, slabby crappies. If it was smaller than 11 inches, it went back. The 29 biggest and tastiest specimens found themselves a date with the fryer. As Dad and Tim held up this stringer full of fish, I noticed that most were a strain called black crappies, while a few of the larger were a close cousin called white crappies.
As we admired our haul and laughed about the wonderful morning, Tim broke up the fun by exclaiming that he had to go to the bathroom, and that if we didn’t head for home soon, he was going to add a third species to our morning’s pursuit… the brown crappie.
