It’s always the last place you lock it

I’m at a conference in Texas. A number of us are accompanying my coworker to his office suite for a strategy meeting. We get on the elevator. He pulls out his room key and looks puzzled. I notice this less than comforting look.

Me: You ok Doc?

Doc: Yeah. I’m having trouble remembering my room number.

Me: Do you want to go and ask at the front desk?

Doc: No. We’ll find it. It has an 8 in it.

Crap.

We get off the elevator on the 30th floor. The five of us walk to room 3028. Doc inserts his key card. Nothing.

Doc: Maybe it was 3208.

We get back on the elevator and ride up two floors. It’s not 3208 either.

Doc: Let’s try 3820.

Me: Hold on a second and think. Do you really not remember?

Doc: (he ignores me) I wonder if my card got demagnetized.

Me: That’s why I always ask for two.

Doc: I did ask for two.

Me: Where’s the other one?

Doc: It’s in the key envelope that has my room number written on it.

Me: Well take it out and look at it.

Doc: I can’t… It’s locked in my room.

He/she should carry a Sharpie and write it on the card directly…
