Tim’s Sucky Idea

The Boundary Waters presented a predicament. To get to where we were going, we had to endure five long portages through the forest, carrying our canoes, fishing gear and backpacks. These portages would each keep us away from the lake for more than an hour. The predicament came with the bait we wanted to bring in – leeches.

Me: How are we going to keep our leeches alive on the portages?

Dad: We could just take it slow, carrying them in their water jugs and trying not to spill.

Me: Maybe. I just know those portages are tough and that by the time we reach the next lake we’ll have a dry container and a pound of shriveled up, dead leeches.

Tim: Or we could take them out of their water, let them attach to our bodies and carry them that way instead.

That awful visual was all it took for us to abandon our thoughts of leeches and to to fish with artificial lures instead.

Tim always has had an uncanny ability to bring a new perspective. Some perspectives do suck more than others!
