Five years ago, Laura’s family started a new tradition. Every Sunday evening they gather together to share in Family Dinner. Laura’s family is lucky in that most of them have decided to stay close together in Kansas City. Because of their proximity, it’s not uncommon to have a couple dozen folks cozy up to the dinner table. The location rotates from house to house each week, the menu is decided by the host and everyone typically brings something to share.
We share a few laughs, lament about work, celebrate birthdays, swim in the pool, toss around the baseball and just generally enough the pleasure of each other’s good company. If Friday night and the potential of two days of rest is the start of a great weekend, Sunday dinner and the anticipation it brings is a wonderful way to wrap it up.
As we make the transition from one generation to the next, the bonds we strengthen over something as simple as bowl of chili, a glass of lemonade, and a homemade brownie are worth so much more than the food in our bellies. I think it’s safe to say that it’s the love of food that brings us to family dinner, but it’s the love of family that keeps us coming back.
