Snowed In

You’ve probably heard the saying when it rains it pours. So it has been with snow this winter in Kansas City. I believe that we’ve only have four snow events – the first was a dusting of 2-3 inches, and the last three have dumped 13, 11 and 9 inches respectively. On the afternoon of our 11 inch blizzard I was out shoveling my driveway. The plow hadn’t come through our neighborhood and the road was snow-packed. I was half way done when an SUV with four guys in it stopped at the T in front of our house. I looked up from my shovel as their window rolled down. “We’ll finish your driveway for $30,” hollered the driver.

“No thanks, I’m good.” I responded with a smile.

With that he started to move along, and then promptly got stuck in a wicked drift.

After a few moments of burning rubber, the men poured out of the car, unlatched the trunk, each produced a shovel and started digging. They were still trying to get un-stuck 20 minutes later as I finished the driveway. Before I went inside, I went into the street and helped to dig and push them free.

“Thanks for your help, amigo,” the driver said as they loaded back into the car.

“No problem – that’ll be $30,” I said with a wink. “Drive safely, boys.”
