In fishing it’s always wise to have at least two of every lure, that way if the one you’re fishing with is working but breaks off, you’ve got a backup waiting in the wings. I believe in this so much that I’ve retired a couple of lures that work really well but that I can no longer get more of. Foremost among them is a lure called the Gold Digger.
Twenty years ago we bought a boat back in Ontario. As we were completing the transaction a flash of gold caught my eye. I picked it up from the carpeted floor of the fiberglass boat and offered it back to the man who was selling us the fishing boat. “Keep it kid,” he said, “that there’s the gold digger and it’s really good for pickerel.”
Since then I’ve used it two or three times and I’ve caught fish on it each time. It’s such a great lure that I’ve since retired it. I’d rather daydream about the fish it could catch rather than risk losing it to catch the actual fish.
Last week over dinner with my family I shared my theory on duplicating lures.
Mom: Why don’t you Google it and buy more on the Internet.
Me: What do you think I should Google, mom?
Mom: The lure’s name, of course – Gold Digger.
Me: Mom, I don’t think a Google search for “Gold Digger” is going to turn up many fishing lures.
